Topic – Childhood
This term, our Childhood topic will focus on how life changes over time. Children will develop their understanding of the past by exploring a range of artefacts and historical sources to learn about childhood in previous generations and how it compares to today. They will investigate the six stages of life, create and interpret timelines and family trees, and learn about daily life in the 1950s, including shopping, transport, family life and childhood experiences. Children will also explore the significance of Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation in 1953 through photographs and online resources. Using maps, they will examine how places have changed over time and identify similarities and differences between childhood in the 1950s and the present day.
English
In English, children will develop their writing skills through a variety of engaging activities. They will begin by writing labels, lists and captions before creating their own narrative inspired by The Train Ride by June Crebbin. Later in the term, they will read and write reports about Toys of the Past, using Toys and Games (Ways Into History) by Sally Hewitt as a stimulus. Throughout their learning, children will focus on accurate punctuation, including the use of capital letters, full stops and question marks. They will also continue to develop sentence structure, vocabulary choices and the use of descriptive language to enhance their writing.
Reading
Children will continue to participate in daily phonics lessons following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme. In addition, they will take part in guided reading sessions twice a week, where they will read and discuss texts with an adult to develop fluency, comprehension and confidence. Children will also complete simple reading comprehension tasks with a focus on retrieval skills. Their reading book will be sent home each week to share and practise with family members. They will also have the opportunity to borrow a library book of their choice to enjoy at home.
Mathematics
Year 1 children will focus on developing a secure understanding of numbers to 20, counting forwards and backwards with increasing fluency. They will learn to read, write and represent numbers in both numerals and words, identify one more and one less than a given number, and
develop their understanding of addition and subtraction within 10, including calculations involving zero. Year 2 children will build on their existing mathematical knowledge by extending their understanding of numbers to 100. They will further develop their skills in addition and subtraction, including calculations involving two-digit numbers, while strengthening their confidence and accuracy in problem-solving.
Religious Education (RE)
In RE, children will explore the question: “Who do Christians believe created the world?” They will study the Creation story from Genesis Chapter 1 and learn that Christians believe the universe and human life are part of God’s creation. Children will also explore the belief that humans are made in the image of God and consider what this means for Christians.
Science
In Science, children will first learn about materials. They will investigate a range of everyday materials, identify the materials from which objects are made, and explore where these materials come from. Children will also examine different material properties and understand how these properties influence the way materials are used.
Later in the term, children will learn about the human body and the senses. They will discover that humans are mammals, identify and name body parts, and recognise similarities and differences between individuals. They will learn about the five senses, the body parts associated with each sense, and how our senses help us to understand and interact with the world safely.
Geography
In Geography, children will develop their understanding of physical and human features, maps, cardinal compass points, and positional and directional language. They will learn about the equator, hemispheres and continents before beginning to explore the countries, capital cities and settlements of the United Kingdom. Children will also undertake simple fieldwork activities to investigate local physical and human features within their community.
Art and Design
Children will explore the fundamentals of colour theory through the study of the colour wheel and colour mixing. They will learn about primary and secondary colours and investigate how artists use colour to create different effects and meanings within their artwork.
Design and Technology
In Design and Technology, children will explore portraiture and learn how collage techniques can be used to create portraits. They will then investigate shelters, considering their purpose and the materials from which they are made. Children will identify and describe different types of shelters before designing and creating their own shelter prototypes.
Our P.E. Days are Wednesday and Friday. On P.E. days, children need to come to School wearing their P.E. Kit. Please ensure that any earrings are removed and long hair is tied back. Thank you!
