Oak Class - Years 3 and 4

Welcome to the Oak Class page. Here you can find out about all the exciting things we are learning and doing in Years 3 and 4.

Our Learning

In Oak Class, we have a dynamic curriculum that evolves throughout the year. Here's what we've been exploring:

Through the Ages: We have been learning about British prehistory, from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, and the changes in people's lives due to inventions and technology.

Rocks, Relics and Rumbles: In this unit we focus on the Geography and Geology of our planet, including the layers of the Earth and volcanic, tectonic, and seismic activity.

English

We are always working to improve our English skills. We refresh our knowledge of grammar, word classes, and sentence structures. We also focus on handwriting using Kinetic letters and explore things like homophones, paragraphing and speech. We have been writing character and setting descriptions, and this term we are writing reports and poetry.

Reading

We use various methods to analyse texts and identify the different features authors use to impact readers. We are developing our comprehension skills by answering different types of questions. We encourage the children to read as much as possible at home and record it in their reading record books.

Maths

At the beginning of the year, we focus on place value and understanding the number system, including representing, comparing, ordering and partitioning numbers. We work on multiplication tables in class, and regular practice at home is highly encouraged, for example, using TT Rockstars. Year 4 will complete the Multiplication Skills Check in June. Later in the year, we will be looking at formal written methods of multiplication and division, and we will start to look at fractions and decimals.

RE

In RE, we have been learning about what it means to follow God. We learn about key figures from the Old Testament, such as Noah and the Prophets, and the meaning of ‘covenant’ and God's promises. This term, we are looking at how and why people show commitment through life's journey, including religious celebrations like Baptism.

Other Subjects

Art and Design: We started the year with a project on Prehistoric Pots, exploring clay techniques to make and decorate Bell Beaker-style pottery. Our current project is ‘People and Places’, where we are studying figure drawings and urban landscapes by LS Lowry and creating artwork in his style.

Science: Our first science topic was ‘Animal Nutrition and the Skeletal System’, learning about the importance of nutrition and the roles of skeletons and muscles. We are now studying Forces and Magnets, investigating contact and non-contact forces, including friction and magnetism.

PE: our P.E. Days are Wednesday and Friday. On P.E. days, children need to come to School wearing their P.E. Kit. Please ensure that any earrings are removed and long hair is tied back. Thank you!

Meet the Teacher

Mr. Armstrong is our class teacher. Mrs. Hearn and Mrs. Lovett also work with the children in Oak Class and throughout the school.
